Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023: It’s Time for Change

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 9% of the U.S. population, or 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder in their lifetime1. Additionally, eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose, with 26% of people with eating disorders attempting suicide2.

Organized by the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is an annual campaign focused on educating the public about the realities of eating disorders. Taking place from Monday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 5, the week is also an opportunity to give hope, support and increased visibility to everyone affected by eating disorders.

The importance of awareness. This year’s commemoration is focused on Strength Through Experience and Knowledge by recognizing that It’s Time for Change. The week provides an opportunity for the healthcare community to focus on lived eating disorder experiences and education, reach people who may not realize they or a loved one may be at risk, and provide resources needed for treatment and support.

Choose your challenge and get involved. Considering the growing need to drive awareness of eating disorders and support available in our local communities, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health encourages the community to commit to participating in one of the following opportunities during EDAW:

Become an EDAW Collaborator: People from all walks of life impacted by eating disorders, from those who have experienced an eating disorder firsthand to educators and behavioral therapists, are committed to raising awareness during EDAW and beyond. Sign up to be a collaborator and get more ideas and resources to increase exposure in your community.

Enjoy the Lighting Campaign: From coast-to-coast buildings across the United States will light up in the colors blue and green from Feb. 27 through March 5. Check out the NEDA website for a listing of states and landmarks that will light the skies in honor of this important awareness week.

Drive Awareness on Social Media: Find shareable graphics to use in your communications about EDAW 2023. Be sure to tag your posts about EDAW on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok with this year’s hashtags: #EDAW and #EDAW2023.

Finding more support. Linden Oaks Behavioral Health is available to discuss treatment options for any level of behavioral healthcare, including assessment and treatment of eating disorders. If you know someone who would benefit from talking about their treatment options related to eating disorders or another concern, please encourage them to contact our 24/7 Help Line at 630-305-5027 or complete our Assessment Request Form and one of our staff will contact them to assist.
