It's not cheating; how to use convenient care and stay loyal to your family doc

April 29, 2022 | by Jacqueline Ross, M.D.

Let’s say you have been taking your child to the same pediatrician since she was born. You have a family doctor you love. Everyone in your family gets regular check-ups.

Consider this scenario: It’s evening. Your daughter falls off her bike during a post-dinner ride, possibly spraining her ankle. Or she’s suddenly seriously nauseous. Or you just noticed a bizarre rash.

You call your doctor’s office, but they’re booked solid  or not open. What do you do?

Enter convenient care.

Our Edward-Elmhurst Health Walk-In Clinics are able to handle things like bumps, bruises, fevers and rashes. Our Immediate Care Centers can handle all of the above and more complicated situations as well, such as sprains, minor broken bones and moderate burns. Find a walk-in location near you.

Plus, we have a way to save you time and make life just a bit easier. Now you can let us know you’re on your way to save your spot at a walk-in care location. It’s even easier when you use the MyEEHealth™ app.

In most non-life-threatening medical situations, it’s best to call your doctor’s office first if possible. However, if illness strikes after hours you can still get care quick.

Later, you can let your doctor know the diagnosis, medications prescribed and tests performed. Schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor if needed or if you’re not feeling better.

There are times when it’s better to schedule a wellness visit with your family doctor or pediatrician, such as:

  • To track developmental milestones in children
  • To discuss nutrition, safety and emotional well-being
  • To raise concerns about sleep or nutrition
  • To manage existing medical conditions or identify new ones
  • To discuss prevention and treatment recommendations
  • To ask for guidance on reducing risk for disease
  • To manage medications

While it’s best to use your primary care doctor (who’s most familiar with your medical history) whenever possible, there are times when convenient care is a quick, easy option.

When convenience and expertise matter most, Edward-Elmhurst Health offers same-day walk-in care for your minor to moderate illnesses and injuries. Open seven days a week, no appointment needed. Learn more about walk-in care for life’s unexpected urgencies.
