Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Following a traumatic event or after living with recurring trauma, many survivors experience symptoms including depression, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, avoidant behavior, or sleep disturbances.

Over time, some people recover and feel their life has returned to a state that seems normal. For others, these reactions can become chronic and a person might feel “stuck,” like their trauma happened yesterday even if it happened months, years or decades ago. This stalling of the healing process is known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

We treat traumas related to

  • Natural disasters: a sudden and terrible event in nature (such as a hurricane, tornado, or flood) that usually results in serious damage and many deaths.
  • Neglect: failure of a caregiver to meet a dependent person’s basic physical and emotional needs, including the need for shelter, food, clothing, medical care, and emotional support.
  • Psychological, physical, or sexual abuse: interactions in which one person behaves in a cruel, violent, demeaning, or invasive manner toward another person.
  • School/workplace/community violence: any behavior that is intended to harm other people in a social setting.

Ages treated

  • 11 (in 6th grade) and older

Level of treatment offered

Treatment approach and techniques

We offer cognitive processing therapy (CPT), a highly effective, short-term, group-based therapy for people with PTSD. In CPT, we identify ways trauma has changed the beliefs a person has about themselves, other people and the world.

Treatment hours (dependent on your level of care)

  • Inpatient: 24/7 around the clock care
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): 3 hours a day, 5 days a week
  • Counseling/medication management: By appointment (daytime, nighttime and weekend hours)

Outcome measures and/or patient quotes/success stories

Over 85% of individuals who complete our program report significant improvement in their PTSD symptoms, and over 55% report symptoms mild enough to no longer meet criteria for a PTSD diagnosis.
