Cardio-Oncology program

Some chemotherapy drugs, and radiation therapies directed at the chest area, may cause side effects to the heart. At Edward-Elmhurst Health, our oncologists and cardiologists work together to protect you from cardiovascular complications caused by cancer treatments.

As part of the Cardio-Oncology program at Edward-Elmhurst Health, your cardiologist and oncologist will work together to determine the most appropriate care for your condition, which may include:

  • Risk assessment tools to determine if you are at risk of damaging your heart muscle
  • Anti-neurohormonal medications to diminish or prevent the decline of cardiac function
  • An echocardiogram with strain test (if you are prescribed certain drugs) - these tests are read by specially-trained physicians with expertise in this field
  • A chest X-ray, EKG, and cardiologist consult if necessary

Your oncologist is very knowledgeable about the program and would be happy to discuss it with you and your family. Be sure to ask your doctor if this could be of benefit to you or your loved one.
