Spiritual care

We are aware of the personal impact a healthcare crisis can have. This is true whether it involves a new diagnosis, surgical intervention, chronic pain and suffering, or a difficult medical decision. If you need solace and strength while you’re here, the spiritual care team at Edward-Elmhurst Health can help. We offer a range of non-denominational spiritual care services to patients, family members and hospital staff.

Spiritual care at Edward

We offer daytime and evening grief recovery support groups twice a week in the Edward Education Center on the Naperville campus, or you can call our grief hotline at 630-527-5056. We hold worship services in the Chapel (televised on Channel 60). Printed prayers, books and a special prayer request albums are also available in the Chapel. To request a chaplain visit during your hospital stay, please call 630-527-5256 (extension 75256 in-house) or email us.

Spiritual care at Elmhurst

We offer one daytime and one evening grief recovery support group at Elmhurst Hospital. Also, we offer an interfaith worship service each Tuesday and Thursday at noon in the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Chapel, located just off the main lobby. If you are unable to attend and have a prayer request, we invite you to write your request in our Book of Prayer located in the Chapel.

We’re here 24/7

Our chaplains are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We have a team of full-time and on-call chaplains so you always have someone to turn to.

You can request a visit from a chaplain through your nurse or by calling the hospital operator. Sometimes, your physician or nurse may refer you to a chaplain to help you deal with a difficult situation, such as the loss of a loved one or a new diagnosis.

Spiritual care team

Our chaplains represent a wide range of faith traditions and were trained to provide ministry in a healthcare setting. When you request a visit from a chaplain, we will spend time understanding your situation to determine what type of spiritual support will provide the most comfort for you and your family. We will always be sensitive to and respect your religious and cultural practices.

Spiritual care services

In addition to meeting everyday needs, the spiritual care team is available for crises, medical emergencies and other critical incidents that require strength and guidance. We provide one-on-one pastoral counseling and group support. You are also welcome to visit our Chapel if you need a quiet place for prayer, reflection or meditation.

The spiritual care team offers a full complement of spiritual care services:

  • Catholic ministries: Volunteer ministers of care serve daily communion in patient care areas. A Catholic priest visits patients, responds to emergencies and provides sacramental anointing. Clergy from local Catholic parishes provide additional support when needed.
  • Crisis intervention, including counseling, listening and prayer
  • Daily rounds to intensive care, oncology, surgical services, neonatal, pediatric and cardiac units
  • Supportive prayer and/or rituals as practiced by the patient and family
  • Emergency infant and adult baptism or blessing
  • Help with end-of-life decisions and other ethical issues
  • Advance directives, do not resuscitate orders, and end-of-life care planning
  • Assistance with funeral home notification and funeral/memorial services
  • Referrals to pastoral counseling centers
  • Networking with local clergy
