The Medical Leadership Academy at Elmhurst Hospital

Medical Leadership Academy Logo The Medical Leadership Academy at Elmhurst Hospital is an exclusive week-long program (Sunday, July 23 – Saturday, July 29, 2017) for highly motivated incoming high school seniors and freshmen/sophomore college students interested in the field of medicine.

Participants will experience college life by staying in student residence halls on the campus of Elmhurst College. It's an opportunity for participants to develop personally, forge new friendships and engage with the community.

The curriculum provides an introduction to medicine through educational lectures, job shadowing and case study analysis. It also provides a forum for participants to develop leadership and interpersonal skills through group discussion, collaboration and patient engagement.

Participants will explore medical specialties such as emergency medicine, cardiology, family medicine, neuroscience, behavioral medicine and palliative care – engaging in interactive experiences with physicians and patients.

 Specifically, they will:

  • Learn specific anatomy and physiology topics
  • Assess and recognize disease states
  • Interpret data (lab results, radiology tests, patient assessments)
  • Understand the mind-body connection
  • Analyze and compare available treatment options
  • Establish a plan of care
  • Communicate a patient treatment plan

"While attending the academy, students will participate in a typical hospital day which starts with morning lectures followed by rounds with doctors and working with real patients. This will lay the groundwork for the very important practice of establishing a sense of bedside manner and medical knowledge enriched with exposure to CPR, lab data and other diagnostic testing."
