Education and training

Because of our commitment to professional development and the pursuit of formal education, Edward-Elmhurst Health provides a variety of education and training opportunities for our nurses.

Tuition reimbursement

Full-time nurses and qualifying part-time employees at Edward-Elmhurst are eligible for tuition assistance each year.

Research and learning opportunities

Edward-Elmhurst nurses in any position have the opportunity to participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice and nursing research. Additional avenues for learning include:

  • Informal in-services on the nursing units
  • Innovative education, including unit-based educators, on-line learning systems, and simulation labs
  • Annual nursing scholarships through the Foundation at Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals
  • Lunch and Learn programs
  • Collaboration with area universities to offer an annual evidence-based practice conference

Teaching a new generation of nurses

Our nurses serve as preceptors and role models for the 1,000 nurses who rotate through Edward-Elmhurst Health each year. Many of our nurses serve as faculty at several schools of nursing.

Edward-Elmhurst Health also offers opportunities for new nursing graduates through our Nurse Resident Program. The program helps nurse residents successfully transition to the field by providing a safe, nurturing learning environment during their first year of practice. Our resident programs in both Elmhurst and Naperville hire nurses full time to help smooth the transition into the workforce and assist with growth and development.

Structured transition program for transferring nurses

Our transition program provides extended orientation and supervision to qualified Edward-Elmhurst nurses interested in switching to a new field of nursing, such as emergency, surgery or family birthing.
