What to expect

When you need lab work, these guidelines will help you prepare for your test, speed up your visit and get you quickly on your way.

Appointments are preferred. Walk-ins are accepted, but you may experience delays.
Note: Walk-ins are not accepted for COVID testing.

What to bring

Lab tests require an order from your doctor’s office. Your physician should have placed an electronic order for your testing or provided you with a prescription for your testing. If you have a copy of your order, bring it to your visit. You’ll also need a photo I.D. and your insurance card.

How to prepare

If you need to have blood drawn, wear clothing that allows access to your elbow area. Patients who are having an EKG should wear two-piece outfits for access to the chest area.

Some tests require special preparation, such as:

  • Fasting for 10-12 hours
  • Following a special diet
  • Specific times for specimen collection or drop off
  • Use of lab-provided containers to collect specimens

Check the instructions provided to you by your doctor regarding your laboratory visit and follow them carefully.

Your lab visit

When you arrive at the lab location, check in at the registration desk and complete any necessary paperwork. You will be seen as quickly as possible for your lab work and should generally be in and out in less than 30 minutes.

Your test results

Your doctor should have your results within 24-48 hours and will share them with you. Your doctor is the best person to answer questions about your lab results. If you are an Edward Hospital patient you may view your results through MyChart
