Inpatient Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care

Nobody wants their child to be in the hospital. At Edward-Elmhurst Health, we understand how scary a hospital stay can be for our littlest patients — and for parents too. We’ll do everything we can to help your child feel comfortable and get him or her healthy again, and hopefully make things easier on you as well.

What we offer

No matter what level of care your child needs, we can deliver it. Our Inpatient Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Edward Hospital provides a wide range of care for children ages 0-17, including medical and surgical interventions, and basic and advanced support — all in a calming, child-friendly environment.

As one of 10 pediatric critical care centers in the state, Edward Hospital offers a fully equipped, 16-bed combined Inpatient Pediatrics and PICU, providing everything from basic pediatric care to advanced life support. Your child will receive expert pediatric care in warm and friendly environment. We have 24/7 coverage by board-certified pediatric intensivists and in-house pediatric hospitalists.

We strive to make your child’s stay as comfortable and homelike as possible, while providing expert pediatric care. You can take comfort in knowing that, if needed, we can quickly transfer any child who requires hospital admission from the kid-friendly Emergency Department (ED) at Elmhurst Hospital, or the freestanding emergency center in Plainfield, to Edward’s Inpatient Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Children and teens, ages 12-17, who are treated in the ED or have undergone outpatient surgery at Elmhurst Hospital and need to be admitted to the hospital, will continue to receive inpatient care at Elmhurst Hospital on our medical-surgical unit.

Our five-bed special procedure area, located adjacent to Edward’s Inpatient Pediatrics and PICU, offers comprehensive outpatient testing and treatment for children, including sedation, endocrine testing, infusion and chemotherapy services.

The team includes infant and pediatric subspecialists, such as neonatologists and intensivists (physicians double boarded in pediatrics and critical care medicine), as well as a highly-skilled nursing staff all trained in pediatric advanced life support with specialized training in pediatric and trauma care.

Edward-Elmhurst’s pediatric nurse navigator plays an important role in your child’s care. The navigator helps to coordinate your child’s care while acting as a liaison between the doctor/care team and you and your child. The navigator will monitor your child’s progress and coordinate all appointments and tests needed. To reach the pediatric patient navigator, call 630-527-KIDS (5437).

Child life specialists are also available at Edward to comfort children and teens being treated. They help young patients relax, prepare them for treatment and teach them how to cope.
