Mental Health First Aid Public Programs for 2016
Community Mental Health First Aid Classes:
How to identify and support those in a mental health crisis
Linden Oaks Behavioral Health is once again hosting Mental Health First Aid classes in 2016. These evidence-based public education programs advise people on how to help someone with a mental health issue or crisis by teaching them to identify those with mental illness, communicate with them, and guide them to the appropriate source for help.
The eight-hour programs are useful for all people, whether involved in health services or not, as the purpose of these classes is to make responding to a mental health crisis as common as addressing other medical emergencies.
This year, Linden Oaks will host several classes at its own outpatient centers in Naperville, Elmhurst, Plainfield, St. Charles, and Arlington Heights throughout the year. Denise Elsbree, Linden Oaks Mental Health First Aid coordinator, said this is, in part, being done to make attendance easier and more convenient for people who already have awareness of our inpatient and outpatient facilities, including former patients and their family and friends. The classes are particularly important for these groups of people, as they provide awareness and limit the severity of crisis moments.
“The benefit from a patient-family member perspective is that it teaches signs and symptoms for different mental health illnesses,” Elsbree said. “Early recognition of the signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge can help to mitigate the severity of that episode of the illness and improves treatment outcomes, hopefully preventing a crisis situation.”
Class participants learn how to apply MHFA in various situations, including panic attacks, self-injury, acute psychosis, drug overdose, drug withdrawal, and reactions to traumatic events. The class teaches the five-step ALGEE method, which involves assessing for risk of suicide or harm, listening nonjudgmentally, giving reassurance and information, encouraging appropriate professional help, encouraging self-help, and other support strategies.
To learn these techniques and make applying them easier in real-life situations, the classes employ role playing, scenarios, and other activities. The class also provides a basic understanding of what different mental illnesses and addictions are, which is very helpful for the loved ones of those who have been recently diagnosed with a mental illness.
Barry Groesch, a Linden Oaks Mental Health First Aid Instructor, can attest to the usefulness of the classes. While facilitating a class organized by Linden Oaks at Edward, Groesch recounted a tale of a trainee who helped his daughter get through a difficult time using the ALGEE action plan. Using the techniques learned from class, the man was able to help his daughter through her trying time.
“This was truly a teaching moment and the class was in awe of what took place,” Groesch said. “We have heard stories like this in the past, but never that soon.”
The fee for the class is $40. Attendance at both youth classes in this session is required.
