In this video, Neha Shah, M.D., discusses the benefits of a 5-10% weight loss.
As Dr. Shah explains, even small amounts of weight loss (as small as 10-20 pounds for some patients) can dramatically improve health. For many patients, weight loss can decrease risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, insulin resistance, cholesterol and sleep apnea.
She adds that weight loss can be an important part of the treatment plan for many health conditions. For example, for hypertension, 5-10% of body weight loss can provide about a 5% reduction in blood pressure, which is comparable to first line blood pressure medications.
