The title sounds impressive.
IBM Watson Health™ ranked Edward-Elmhurst Health among the 15 Top Health Systems in the nation this spring, recognition based on publicly available clinical, operational and patient satisfaction metrics and data.
But what is that data? And who or what is IBM Watson Health?
More importantly, what should it mean to you?
First, Watson Health is a business unit of IBM that is dedicated to the development and implementation of cognitive and data-driven technologies to advance health.
As part of its data analysis, Watson Health conducts three major studies of hospitals and health systems each year: the Watson Health™ 100 Top Hospitals study, 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals and 15 Top Health Systems.
Watson Health pulls information from public data sources (such as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare), crunches the numbers and uses them to evaluate hospital and health system performance.
The public data they look at covers categories such as how safe the hospital is, how long patients wait in the ER for care, how long patients stay in the hospital, and overall patient experience, among other things.
The 15 Top Health Systems are the top-performing health systems in the country, based on that data. This year, Watson Health evaluated 338 health systems. From that evaluation, they chose the top 15.
