10 ways to stay active while traveling

Summer is perfect for traveling. It’s a chance to take a break from the day-to-day and enjoy some time to yourself or with family.

Even though you’re breaking out of your routine, you don’t have to sacrifice your workout for a road trip. You can get it done! These tips will help you fit exercise into your travel itinerary:

  • Book accordingly. Seek out accommodations that fit your fitness needs and likes. Find out if there is a pool or fitness center or if the location is close enough to walk where you need to go.
  • Check your health club connections. Check to see if your health club has a sister facility near where you are staying or if your club is a member of IHRSA (International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association). If so, either one allows you to use that facility at little or no cost while traveling. BONUS: Edward-Elmhurst Health & Fitness is a member of IHRSA!
  • Pack smart. Bring or wear a pair of shoes you can walk or workout in along with workout-wear that dries quickly. Bring an extra plastic bag for sweat-soaked clothes just in case.
  • Bring tools. Not sure if your travel location will have the fitness tools you like or need? A resistance band, jump rope, TRX Suspension Trainer, and mini foam rollers pack very well – and don’t forget about using your own body as a tool!
  • Stretch it out. Planes, trains and automobiles can wreak havoc on your body during extended travel times. Make sure you get up or stop to walk around and stretch every hour or so to keep the blood flowing and reduce muscle stress and tension.
  • Keep moving. Walk while sightseeing and use the stairs when possible. Some cities even have bicycle rentals available — check with the local city hall.
  • Stay safe. Keep your phone handy if you’re taking a walk or a run. Use the concierge or your phone’s GPS to map your course and make sure someone at the hotel knows what you are doing.
  • Break away. Your travels may introduce you to a new fitness format or activity. Your body may need a break from your regular routine, so try something new.
  • Go for a fitness vacation. Plan your next trip around a favorite fitness activity. A biking, skiing or hiking vacation may be your ticket to health.
  • Be realistic. Whether your trip is for business or pleasure, having overzealous expectations about your travel fitness routine can lead to disappointment. Try your best to maintain your current activity level, but allow yourself to enjoy this ‘recovery’ time and know that you may only workout about 50 percent of your norm.
