Elmhurst Run of the Month Sept 2016

Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for September 2016 to the Oak Brook Fire and Police Departments.

Police Officers John Jacobs and Lori McLaughlin, Fire Chief Barry Liss and Paramedics Zachary Busse, John Fagan, Kyle Matousek, Gino Picciola, Michelle Ruska, Thomas Sinclair, Theodore Vassios and Glen Washington were recognized for their treatment of a 71-year-old man who had gone into cardiac arrest.

On September 30, 2016, Officers Jacobs and McLaughlin, and Chief Liss arrived first and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They also administered one shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Upon their arrival, paramedics took over administering CPR and other Advanced Life Support (ALS) care, including additional shocks from an AED and medication, while at the residence and in the ambulance on the way to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department.

The patient survived and was released a few days later from Elmhurst Hospital.

In the “Run of the Month” program, Elmhurst Hospital’s EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized based on the following criteria:

  • Excellent communication from the field that resulted in the timely delivery of pertinent clinical information to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department staff
  • Clear and thorough documentation
  • Superior clinical assessment skills that resulted in accurate recognition of a clinical situation
  • Behavior exceeding the call of duty in the field
  • Superior partnership and teamwork with Elmhurst Hospital
