As system medical director of palliative care, I seek to help our patients get a clear understanding of their situation and of the choices they have available to them. This comes out of personal experience. I was introduced to palliative care medicine as a specialty when both of my parents were diagnosed with chronic, serious illnesses. To see the way my father’s, and my mother's, cultures, backgrounds and personalities were honored through their care was inspiring. This led me to switch my focus from internal medicine to palliative care medicine.

We believe the best care genuinely comes when you treat the whole person—mind, body and spirit. That’s why in addition to conventional medical care, we employ a range of treatment modalities for our patients. Integrative measures range from optimal nutrition and acupuncture, to meditation, drumming therapy and more.

Getting bloodwork is often a bad experience for people. But we’re proud to say that’s not how it is here at Edward-Elmhurst Health. We know that our work in the lab is a part of a much larger patient experience and we want to do our part in making that experience as painless, seamless and personal as possible. We do that by taking the time to listen—practicing extraordinary patience with each individual. It may sound elementary, but it’s absolutely necessary to make everyone who comes to Edward-Elmhurst Health feel like they have someone on their side.

Illuminating the blind spots

Marc Browning, RN, PsyD

When I talk about mental health, I often use sports metaphors. As a former college athlete, it comes naturally, but I also find it useful in helping my patients understand what’s going on with their mental health. What we do for our clients is akin to watching a football game from the top of the stands. This is our perspective. We get to see the ways in which life’s plays are developing, we understand the big picture and we illuminate blind spots for people. It doesn’t get much more personal than mental health. We count ourselves lucky to get to care for our community so deeply and holistically.
