The Leapfrog Group has awarded Elmhurst Hospital with an A in its Spring 2023 Hospital Safety Grades. It’s the 23rd consecutive time Elmhurst Hospital has earned an A, making it one of only 20 hospitals in the country and three in Illinois to be awarded an A in every Hospital Safety Grade cycle since 2012.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This national distinction celebrates Elmhurst Hospital’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. The new grades reflect performance primarily during the height of the pandemic.

“We’re very proud to have maintained an A for more than a decade,” says Kimberley Darey, MD, CPE, FACOG, President, Elmhurst Hospital. “That we were able to earn an A during perhaps the most challenging time in the history of healthcare says so much about our team members and their commitment to their profession and, most importantly, our patients.”

The extension of the straight-A streak in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades is one of several honors, awards and recognitions related to quality and safety Elmhurst Hospital has achieved:

  • In 2023, Elmhurst Hospital once again was awarded Gold Certification for Excellence in Person-Centered Care by Planetree International. Elmhurst Hospital is one of only 97 healthcare organizations worldwide, 22 in the U.S. and the only one in Illinois to earn Gold Certification.
  • For third year in a row (2020-22), Merative named Elmhurst Hospital among the 100 Top Hospitals in the U.S.
  • Elmhurst Hospital earned five stars in the 2022 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.

The Leapfrog Group assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to 3,000 general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
