Gastrointestinal

Your digestive system supports your entire body. The organs of the digestive system include the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. These organs work together to move food through your stomach and intestine, digest and absorb it, transport nutrients into your body, and remove waste from your system.

If you’re having digestive problems, the earlier you seek treatment, the greater your chances of a favorable outcome. The gastroenterologists at Edward-Elmhurst Health are experts in diagnosing and treating digestive health issues.

Gastrointestinal diagnosis and treatment

At Edward-Elmhurst, you have access to the latest advancements to diagnose and treat gastric and intestinal issues. Many options are minimally invasive, such as endoscopy, which uses a thin flexible tube and a miniature camera to examine your organs. We also offer minimally invasive surgical procedures.

da Vinci's Xi, now available at Edward-Elmhurst Health, takes robotic technology to another level, featuring an instrument arm that passes over the operating table, eliminating the need to move the patient and allowing the surgeon-operated robot access from virtually any angle, as well as a bed that responds to the robot's movements, angling the patient as needed.

Reversing GERD without surgery

If you experience reflux disease, you may be a candidate for a procedure known as TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication). During TIF, a surgeon gently inserts a special device through the mouth to reconstruct the valve that connects the stomach to the esophagus. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and no incision is required. TIF patients generally experience fewer long-term complications than those who undergo traditional surgery for GERD.
